Establishing an Association in Costa Rica

An  association in Costa Rica is a non-profit, tax-exempt entity or organization  in which a group of people are organized for a joint purpose. The law authorizes the creation of Associations for “scientific, artistic, sports, charitable, recreational and any other lawful purposes that are not solely and exclusively for profit or gain.” Steps To Establish: 1: Agree on the constitution of the legal entity. All members must present a draft of the statutes and the requirements of each figure. The constitution must be notarized. Each association must be integrated by 10 people or more and have a board of directors of at least 7. 2: Register with the National Registry  This may take 15-22 days for members to register with the national registry section of legal entities. 3: Obtain an identification number  This is when the association is granted legal status and books will be legalized.  4: Maintain association Administrative board must provide annual reports of the activities of the associa

Review of Smart Bird ID

Image
This is a free application that can be downloaded from the  App Store . It is aimed at helping users learn about and identify birds using both image ID and song ID. One of my favorite things about this app as opposed to other bird identifying resources, is how user friendly it is. There are multiple features to note such as an interactive map and feed of nearby birds, a categorized list of species to browse, and a section labeled "My Birds" that saves your identified birds to one place.  Another notable feature of this app that sets it apart from other identifying apps is that when it is identifying a bird, rather than giving a single guess, the program gives a breakdown of percentage of likeliness of the closest species. This was a nice feature because it gives the user an idea of how accurate the result is. For example, if a list of 5 birds each with 20% rating is given, this may not be as accurate of a result as two birds and one of them being 90% reliable. As with most wi

Climate Information

I am providing a list of a few resources which I found to be most useful when gathering information about my study area's climate. It is beneficial to have these resources in an easily accessible list especially due to the fact that Costa Rica, being out of the country, has fewer reliable climate resources available. Here are a couple that I feel capture the degree of information needed for my intended purposes: While this source seems to be tourism based, it provides a quick overview of the various climates and where you can expect to find them. https://www.costarica.org/facts/climate/ Here is a more detailed breakdown of some common cities. Information on weather by month, average temperatures, humidity, rainfall, etc.   https://en.climate-data.org/north-america/costa-rica-43/ This source contains some extremely useful interactive graphs that give historical and projected data. Information about climate based on sector, impacts, adaptations, and even vulnerability.  https://clima

Web Soil Survey

Image
The Web Soil Survey is the National Cooperative Soil Survey’s up to date information compiled into an accessible, interactive program. They have useful articles, videos, and guides for virtually all aspects of soil health aimed to inform people with any knowledge background from weekend garden enthusiast to the experienced pedologist. On the home page, there are images and descriptions of four basic steps for users to follow in order to navigate the program. If that is not enough information to get you started, or you are stuck on a specific feature of the site, there are other tools that can be utilized. First, there is “Help” option which provides more information on the accessibility features as well as a “Tips and Shortcuts” link which dives into some more specific aspects of the program along with easy to follow pictures. Lastly, there is even a “Frequently Asked Questions” link which is pretty self-explanatory.   Upon launching the program, you will find an area of interest map.
